Nick Gibb served as the MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton 1997 to 2024 in which time he helped thousands of local people with their problems. He represented the views of all his constituents, regardless of how they voted, at the highest levels of government.
Nick's background
Nick Gibb was born in 1960 and educated at Maidstone Grammar School; Roundhay School, Leeds; Thornes House School, Wakefield; and Durham University, where he studied law.
Between 1984 and his election to Parliament in 1997, Nick was a chartered accountant with KPMG specialising in corporate taxation.
Nick's work in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton
Nick was first elected in 1997. He has held the positions of Frontbench Spokesman on Trade and Industry (1997 – 1998; 1999-2001), Frontbench Spokesman on the Treasury (1998 - 1999), and Shadow Minister for Education and Shadow Minister for Schools (2005-2010).
As the MP, Nick visited a variety of local charities, organisations and businesses in our community. As well as keeping him informed, it gave them the opportunity to promote their work to a wider audience.
Nick was involved in many local campaigns for more than two decades, such as helping to save Bognor War Memorial Hospital, the fight against Ford Eco-Town, the response to the floods of 2012 and the ongoing battle against large scale developments on greenfield sites. He showed a keen interest in the progress of the schools in the local area, and in 2017 launched the 'Read to succeed' summer reading scheme which gave every Year 4 pupil in the constituency a book to keep, thanks to the support of local businesses and the wider community.
Nick's work on education
Following the General Election in 2010, Nick was appointed by the Prime Minister to become Minister of State for Schools at the Department for Education where he served until September 2012. He returned to the post in July 2014. When Theresa May became Prime Minister in July 2016, Nick was appointed Minister for School Standards.
He is passionate about education and, as a senior Minister in the Department for Education in David Cameron's, Theresa May's and Boris Johnson's governments (2010-2012, 2014-2021), worked to deliver higher standards and better pupil behaviour in our schools.
Nick was made a Privy Councillor in 2016. He was re-elected as MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton at the General Election in December 2019 with an increased majority of 22,503 and share of vote rising to 63.4%
Following the election he was re-appointed as Minister of State for School Standards, a position he held until September 2021. On 26 October 2022, the new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, appointed Nick back to the Department for Education as Schools Minister.
On 13 November 2023, Nick Gibb announced he was stepping down as Minister of State for Schools, and would be standing down as the Member of Parliament for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton at the next general election, which he did on 30 May 2024.
